Lagos State Branch of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has called off its ongoing strike, following the intervention of the State House of Assembly.

A statement signed by the Secretary of JOHESU, Lagos State branch, Kabiawu Gbolahan, at the weekend, announced the suspension of the strike, stating that the union’s leadership, in extensive consultations with all relevant stakeholders and professional bodies, including the state’s Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) and based on the timely intervention of the Lagos State House of Assembly, gave firm assurances that all issues raised by the union would receive favourable consideration.

The statement, therefore, directed all its members to resume work immediately.

Gbolahan, in the memo, stated that no member of the union should be victimised for the strike action, noting that it was a clear assurance asserted by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

However, in a statement yesterday, the state government said both parties had reached a middle ground and that JOHESU had suspended the strike action.

The statement stated: “The Lagos State government and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have reached an agreement leading to the immediate suspension of the strike previously embarked upon by the union in the state’s health sector.

“The resolution followed a high-level meeting convened by the government to address the issues that gave rise to the industrial action. Both parties engaged in frank and constructive discussions with a commitment to safeguarding public health and restoring normalcy in healthcare facilities in the state.

“During the engagement, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the union’s demands within the framework of established regulations and provided clear assurances, including timelines for the resolution of the outstanding concerns raised by the union.

“In view of these commitments and in the overriding interest of public health and industrial harmony, the leadership of JOHESU resolved to call off the strike. After consulting its relevant organs and members, the union formally communicated its decision to the state government.

“Both parties have agreed to sustain dialogue and maintain open channels of communication to ensure the diligent implementation of the understandings reached.

“Government further acknowledges the vital role of allied health professionals in sustaining efficient healthcare delivery and reiterates its dedication to equitable treatment, improved working conditions and the continuous strengthening of the state’s health system for the benefit of the citizens.

“Healthcare workers are, therefore, expected to resume duties promptly, as the state government continues consultations to ensure that the resolutions reached translate into lasting outcomes.

“Lagos State Government expresses appreciation to residents for their patience and understanding during the period of the strike and reassures the public of its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to quality healthcare services in the state.”
