The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has averted major fire disasters in three separate incidents across the state between Sunday, February 22 and Monday, February 23, 2026, saving properties worth millions of naira and preventing loss of life.
A 35-year-old man was rescued alive during one of the operations and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The rescue operation ended in the early hours of Monday, with the fire crew returning to the station at about 3:21 p.m.
The first incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, when the agency received a distress call reporting a fire outbreak at Bon-Kay Filling Station along Kara Area, Kishi Road/Igbeti.
Firefighters led by AFS Akande were deployed to the scene, where they found a Volvo truck, registration number KSB 300XB, loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, engulfed in flames while transloading fuel into underground tanks.
Preliminary findings showed that sparks generated during the transloading process ignited the fire, affecting the tanker trailer and parts of the filling station. The crew deployed foam chemical compounds to contain the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.
About 15 hours later, at about 12:31 p.m. on Monday, the agency’s headquarters received another distress call concerning a fire at No. 3, Oyo State Housing Estate, Road 28A, Basorun Zone, Ibadan.
Fire personnel led by ACFS Oyeniyi Taofeek responded promptly. Investigations revealed that sparks from batteries connected to a solar panel system triggered the fire. The firefighters, working with the Federal Fire Service, brought the situation under control and prevented further damage.
No casualties were recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were preserved. The operation concluded at about 1:58 p.m., after which officers delivered a safety lecture to residents on fire prevention.
Earlier on Monday at about 9:20 a.m., the agency’s Saki Zonal Command responded to a fire outbreak at Abímbólá Layout, Ogbooro Road, Saki.
Officers led by CFS Ayegbokiki found the kitchen of a three-bedroom flat on fire. The blaze was traced to a gas leakage. Firefighters quickly contained it, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.
The crew returned to the station at about 10:03 a.m. and remained on operational standby.
