Okpebholo not behind alleged attack on Peter Obi, APC, ADC leaders, says Osawaru

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State

House of Representatives member, Dr. Billy Famous Adesuwa Osawaru, has rejected claims that the Edo State Government or Governor Monday Okpebholo orchestrated the recent attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and some ADC leaders.

Osawaru, representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency of Edo State, described the allegations as “malicious, false, and politically motivated,” stressing that no credible evidence has linked the Governor or his administration to the incident.

The alleged attack occurred on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, when suspected gunmen reportedly targeted the political figures during their visit to Edo State.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Osawaru added that Governor Okpebholo’s prior warning to Mr. Obi was motivated by safety concerns, noting that the former presidential candidate’s previous visit to the state had sparked unrest, including fatalities.

The lawmaker emphasised that the Governor’s office has a constitutional duty to ensure the security of residents and visitors.

“Politically exposed persons planning major public events in Edo State are expected to notify authorities in advance to enable proper security coordination. It is unfair to attribute this attack to the Governor without evidence,” Osawaru said.

The lawmaker called on the public, the ADC, and other stakeholders to focus on facts rather than “baseless allegations and inflammatory rhetoric.”

He further urged a thorough and transparent investigation, expressing confidence that it would exonerate Governor Okpebholo.

Osawaru affirmed that the Edo State Government remains committed to maintaining peace, security, and stability for all residents, regardless of political affiliation.a1.jpg
