Adelabu to visit IBEDC, push for improved electricity service in Southwest

Minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is set to pay a working visit to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance electricity service delivery across the country.

The visit, scheduled for this week, will provide an opportunity for the Minister to engage directly with IBEDC management on the urgent need to improve power supply, operational efficiency, customer relations, and overall performance within Ibadan, Oyo State, and the wider area under the company’s influence. IBEDC’s service footprint spans Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, and portions of Niger, Ekiti, and Kogi States.

According to a statement signed by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister, Chief Adelabu’s agenda will include a thorough review of the company’s current service delivery metrics, loss reduction strategies, metering rollout plans, infrastructure upgrades, and responsiveness to customer complaints.

The Minister is expected to use the visit to underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that distribution companies meet their obligations under the ongoing power sector reform framework. The reforms, which seek to provide more reliable and affordable electricity to Nigerians, have placed distribution companies at the forefront of delivering measurable results to citizens and businesses alike.

Chief Adelabu has consistently emphasised that improved distribution efficiency is a critical driver of sustainable reform in the sector. During the engagement, he is anticipated to reiterate the Ministry’s readiness to support IBEDC and other distribution companies, while also demanding accountability, transparency, and tangible improvements in service delivery.

“The Federal Government remains committed to ensuring that Nigerians enjoy reliable, stable, and affordable power supply. Distribution companies have a central role to play in this effort, and we will continue to engage them to meet these obligations,” Chief Adelabu said in a recent statement.

The working visit is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Power to strengthen relationships with electricity distribution companies and enhance oversight of their operations. Officials will closely monitor the implementation of infrastructure upgrades, reduction of technical and commercial losses, and the expansion of metering systems to ensure that customers are billed accurately.

The visit also signals the government’s determination to hold distribution companies accountable for persistent complaints regarding power outages, poor customer service, and inadequate response mechanisms. By engaging management directly, the Ministry seeks to ensure that companies deliver consistent results that match the expectations of both urban and rural electricity consumers.

The Minister’s engagement with IBEDC is expected to set the tone for similar visits to other distribution companies across the country, forming part of a national strategy to transform Nigeria’s electricity sector and improve service delivery for millions of residents and businesses in the Federal Government’s reform agenda.
