Ramadan is a month of discipline, growth, and self-control. But many people unintentionally reduce the benefits of the month because of simple habits. Here are five common mistakes, and why they matter.

1. Skipping Suhoor

Some people miss suhoor because they feel too tired to wake up. Others think skipping it will make the fast easier. In reality, suhoor helps you maintain energy and focus throughout the day. It supports hydration and reduces extreme hunger later. Skipping it can lead to low energy, headaches, and poor concentration, which can affect prayer and productivity.

2. Overeating at Iftar

After hours of fasting, it is easy to lose control when food is finally in front of you. But overeating defeats the purpose of restraint. It leads to bloating, sluggishness,, and sleepiness during night prayers. Ramadan teaches moderation. Eating until you are comfortable, not stuffed, keeps your body lighter and your worship stronger.

3. Sleeping Through Prayers

Some people fast but sleep most of the day to “pass time.” In doing so, they miss obligatory prayers or delay them carelessly. Fasting without prayer weakens the spiritual purpose of Ramadan. The fast is not just physical; it is deeply connected to worship. Sleeping excessively can also disturb your body clock and reduce productivity at night.

4. Wasting Time Online

Ramadan is short, yet many people spend hours scrolling through social media, watching unnecessary videos or engaging in online arguments. Time is one of the greatest losses in this month. The same phone can be used for Qur’an, reminders or beneficial knowledge. If most of your day disappears into your screen, you are not maximising Ramadan.

5. Ignoring Intention

Fasting is not just about staying away from food and drink. It is an act of worship. Renewing your intention daily reminds you why you are fasting for spiritual growth, self-control and closeness to Allah.

Ramadan is not about perfection. It is about awareness. Identifying these mistakes is the first step. Correcting them is what makes the month transformative.
