A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Prince Paul Ikonne, has criticised Governor Alex Otti over what he described as an unbecoming outburst against a journalist during a recent media interaction in the state.
Ikonne condemned the governor’s reaction, describing it as “dictatorial” and inconsistent with democratic principles, while demanding an immediate public apology to the journalist involved.
The incident reportedly occurred during a monthly media briefing on Friday, when a journalist, Chika Nwabueze, asked the governor to provide verifiable data showing how his administration’s policies had directly improved the standard of living of Abia residents, amid criticisms of transparency and inclusive governance.
In response, Governor Otti was said to have described the question as “irresponsible” and “stupid,” a reaction that has since generated public debate.
Reacting in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by his media aide, Chiagoziem Enoch, Ikonne said the governor’s response raised serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and tolerance for scrutiny.
According to him, the journalist acted professionally by asking a question that reflects the concerns of many Abia citizens.
“The journalist demonstrated courage and professionalism by raising issues that directly affect the welfare of Abians. Such questions deserve clear answers, not insults,” Ikonne said.
The APC governorship hopeful questioned why Governor Otti, whom he described as a seasoned economist, failed to provide data-backed evidence to support claims of improved economic performance under his administration.
“As an economist, the governor should be able to present verifiable statistics showing how his policies have impacted traders in Ariaria, farmers across Abia, and unemployed youths. Governance is not about rhetoric; it is about measurable outcomes,” he stated.
Ikonne further argued that with the volume of funds accruing to Abia State from federal allocations and internally generated revenue, the government owes citizens transparent explanations on how those resources have translated into tangible benefits.
He queried whether traders had experienced reduced tax burdens, whether jobs had been created, and the status of the administration’s reported health and social infrastructure projects.
The APC chieftain also linked the governor’s reaction to lingering controversies surrounding the smart school project, alleged write-offs of funds meant for a recreational centre, and what he described as unresolved administrative errors.
According to him, these issues heighten public concern that the current administration prioritises image management over verifiable development outcomes.
“It is troubling that instead of addressing legitimate questions, the governor resorted to personal attacks. This mirrors tendencies associated with intolerance and authoritarianism. In a democracy, leaders must engage dissenting voices, not suppress them,” Ikonne asserted.
