Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos, has raised concerns about the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, alleging that certain established processes and protocols were not followed.
The embattled facility, following the suspension of its Medical Director and two others by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel on Tuesday, stated that in the course of handling the investigation, matters covered by patient and institutional confidentiality appear to have been disclosed outside the appropriate channels.
It described it as a serious breach that should not go unaddressed.
Nkanu, the son of renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Dr Ivara Esege, died on January 7, 2026, after receiving care at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.
The panel also suspended the anesthesiologist at the Euracare hospital, Dr Titus Ogundare, as well as the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr Atinuke Uwajeh.
The trio were suspended from medical practice in Nigeria pending the determination of their case by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, after a prima facie case of medical negligence was established against them in the management of Nkanu’s health.
The Multi-Specialist Hospital expressed commitment to cooperating with all relevant regulatory and judicial authorities in the course of their inquiries.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, Euracare noted that in the interest of transparency, since the commencement of this matter, it conducted a thorough internal review of the clinical events in question, in line with its clinical governance standards and best practices, adding that the hospital has actively demonstrated commitment to transparency and will continue to engage openly with all inquiries directed at it.
Euracare expressed confidence in the professionalism and integrity of two of its clinical team members, Dr Tosin Majekodunmi and Dr Titus Ogundare, describing them as experienced professionals whose records of patient care in Nigeria span many years.
It added that both doctors have, in their respective careers, contributed meaningfully to the delivery of quality healthcare to Nigerian patients at a standard comparable to that of the world’s leading medical facilities.
It insisted that every party to the matter, including the institution and its staff, is entitled to a process conducted with rigour, impartiality, and respect for the rules that govern it.
It added that the hospital’s management will raise these concerns through the appropriate legal and regulatory channels.
