After a decade of dropping her first album, Once Upon a Time, Tiwatope Omolara Savage is broadening her ambition with an additional layer, making her interest as a talent developer a reality.
Tiwa Savage Music Foundation, built with the sole aim of empowering an ecosystem of creative personas from artistes, songwriters, music executives, producers, sound engineers and other talents that fit into the music flora, is finally taking off.
In collaboration with Berkley College of Music, the flagship course will offer free education, access to world-class training materials, and mentorship to 100 participants who will be selected from thousands of participants that have submitted music videos.
For the Eminado crooner, the goal is to give others that same opportunity that was given to her and cement herself as a legend, who, beyond successful career, also trained a generation to come.
A few weeks after the announcement of the foundation, dignitaries including the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Senator Ita-Giwa, Don Jazzy, Bolaji Idowu Abisagboola, Oluseun John, known popularly as Bankulli, Cobhams Asuquo, Dare Art-Alade, Johny Drille and others converged on The Delborough Lagos for the formal launch amid cheers and praises.
To Tiwa, the event was not just a launch of the foundation but an investment in the future of the sound of Nigeria.
Speaking at the launch, she said: “The Tiwa Savage Music Foundation started because I thought we need to work on building infrastructure for our talents, investing in education so that when people see the talents, they also see that they have the accesses.
“We don’t lack talent in Nigeria, we have so much and what I want to do is to create access so that people that have the talent can find the right infrastructure, education and also be a bridge and a pipeline to the rest of the world,” she added.
When asked why she decided to have a foundation instead of partnering with those with similar goals but struggling, she said: “I don’t think there can be enough foundations; we are all trying to make Nigeria and the world a better place. Every foundation needs fund and we are also trying to partner as well.
“We are going to pick 100 talents who do not have to pay for anything. The 100 will get a world call education for four days and we will pick a few of them and sponsor them to study at Berkley College of Music, including providing accommodations. My advice is to use this opportunity as opportunity favours the prepared. Those who do not get this year, will have the task to prepare for next year.”
For Sanwo-Olu, he’s proud of Tiwa Savage and the global brand she has become and her avenue to give back and impact lives.
“I am proud of what you have now chosen to do which is giving an opportunity to many young talented people who probably who never had the opportunity you had and for you to continue widen the space.”
