Defection: ‘Be committed to our principles or be booted out,’ Gov Yusuf cautions commissioners

Governor Yusuf receives the new state Chairman of APC and former Commissioner for Water Resources under his cabinet, Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa at the Government house

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has vowed to “boot out” of his cabinet any commissioner who fails to abide by the dictates and principles of his administration following the current political realignment.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, was conspicuously absent from the Executive Council meeting.

Although the deputy governor is presently facing a two-week notice to clear his name before the State House of Assembly, with impeachment proceedings pending against him, it was not certain whether the absence was connected to the impeachment saga.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Shehu Wada Sagagi, was nowhere to be found at the council meeting.

Yusuf issued the strong warning during the 38th Executive Council Meeting on Thursday, reminding council members whose loyalty may still be divided to have a rethink, stressing that “it will not be business as usual.”

In an earlier remark, Yusuf informed the council that he had accepted the resignation of five commissioners who voluntarily parted ways with his administration. He appealed to other commissioners who have chosen to remain with the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to do so with sincerity of purpose.

The governor specifically warned that “the era of disloyalty, leaking official information, and coming between one another is over,” adding that cabinet members should either align with the principles and procedures of the government or “be booted out.”

According to him: “Out of the total number of commissioners, five have resigned and I have accepted their resignations. I therefore wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours.

“To all those who have decided to remain with us and align with the principles and procedures of our party, I appeal to you to remain true to yourselves and committed to the present administration.

“You should know that we are still one party and we must work together for the betterment of our people. The era of rancour, disloyalty, leaking of information, and coming between one another is over.

“However, that does not mean that whoever goes contrary to the dictates and principles of this administration will not be booted out. I want you to know that I am a committed person. We must align ourselves with all those who believe in the unity of this country and the unity of our people. I want you to be very free in giving your maximum cooperation to all those who need it,” Yusuf added.

The governor also took time to emphasise the reasons behind his decision to defect to the ruling APC, stating that he carried out wide consultations before making the political realignment.

He cited the support he received from all 44 local government chairmen and 24 out of the 26 members of the State House of Assembly, as well as other critical stakeholders who dumped the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party, insisting that the decision was taken in the best interest of Kano State.
