APC Defection: Gov Yusuf urges commissioners to embrace party principles

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has warned that any commissioner who fails to abide by the principles and directives of his administration risks being removed from the cabinet, following the ongoing political realignment in Kano State.

The warning came during the 38th Executive Council Meeting on Thursday, which was marked by the conspicuous absence of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo and Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Shehu Wada Sagagi. It is unclear whether the deputy governor’s absence is related to ongoing impeachment proceedings against him, though he has been given a two-week notice to respond before the State House of Assembly.

Governor Yusuf told council members whose loyalties remain divided to “rethink their positions,” stressing that “it is not going to be business as usual.” He also confirmed that he had accepted the resignations of five commissioners who voluntarily left his administration.
“Out of the total number of commissioners, five have resigned and I have accepted their resignations. I wish them the best in their future endeavours,” he said.
“To those who remain in our government, I appeal to you to stay committed to our principles. The era of disloyalty, leaking official information, and undermining colleagues is over. Anyone acting contrary to the dictates of this administration will be booted out.”

The governor explained that his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) followed extensive consultations, including support from all 44 local government chairmen, 24 of the 26 State House of Assembly members, and key stakeholders who left the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). He insisted that the move was in the best interest of Kano State.
