A fresh set of young swimming talents will converg on Lagos on March 22, 2026, at the Rowe Park Sports Complex, Yaba, as the Lagos State Sports Commission conduct its yearly swimming trials.
The exercise is aimed at identifying and empowering athletes, who will represent the state in upcoming national and international competitions.
The trials are open to all active swimmers, male and female, not older than 16 years and will attract swimmers from clubs, schools, and training centres across the state. It will provide a platform for the young athletes to test their skills while competing for a place in the Lagos State team.
The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, said the trials reflect the commission’s focus on building a strong foundation for sports development through structured competitions and consistent athlete identification.
Fatodu noted that Lagos remains committed to nurturing young talents and creating opportunities that allow promising athletes to grow within a well-organised sporting system.
“These trials go beyond a selection process. They reflect our commitment to discovering and nurturing young talents who will carry the banner of Lagos with pride in national and international competitions.”
“Through structured programmes like this, we continue to build a pathway that allows our young athletes to develop their abilities and compete at the highest level,” he said.
He also acknowledged the strong backing of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose administration has continued to invest in sports development and youth engagement across the state.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Aquatics Association, Mrs. Aderoju Ope-Ajayi, described the trials as an important step in strengthening the competitive structure of swimming in Lagos.
She said the event will give young swimmers an opportunity to compete under organised conditions while exposing them to standards expected at higher levels.
The swimmers will compete in three age categories, including 15 to 16 years, 13 to 14 years, and 12 years and below, she said, adding that events scheduled for the trials include 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 4x50m mixed freestyle relay, and the 4x50m mixed medley relay.
