Super Eagles open camp in Antalya

Super Eagles’ players and officials, yesterday,  arrived in Antalya, Turkey, ahead of Nigeria’s two international friendly games against Iran and Jordan.

The Super Eagles will take on Iran’s senior men’s football team in Antalya on Friday (with kick off set for 4.00 p.m. local time), and meet Jordan on March 31 (with kick off set for 8.00 p.m. local time).

Originally scheduled for the 17,000-capacity Amman International Stadium and the 62,000-capacity King Abdullah Sports City Stadium (also in Amman), Jordan, the games had to be moved to a new venue following the outbreak of military conflict in the Middle East.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the home-based members of the Super Eagles’ delegation to the matches, including backroom staff and NFF officials, arrived in Antalya in the evening, while the Europe-based players were expected to join the camp from their various clubs yesterday.

Coach Eric Chelle invited 23 players for the matches, which are part of the Super Eagles’ rebuilding process following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, billed to hold in North America in June and July.

The squad in Turkey comprises some new faces, some returnees and the majority of the players that featured at the Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria won the bronze medal.

Among the stars are Italy-based goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who skipped the AFCON in Morocco, defender Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, midfielder Frank Onyeka, and forwards Simon Moses, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams and Paul Onuachu.

The new players include Scotland-based defender Emmanuel Oluwasegun Fernandez,  Germany-based forward Philip Otele and KRC Genk of Belgium’s Collins Yira Sor, a former junior international.

Greece-based goal-tender Adeleye Adebayo also returns to the fold.

Jordan is using the game to test their team against an African opposition ahead of their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup, where they will meet Algeria in the group stage.

Before meeting Nigeria on March 31, Jordan will face Costa Rica at Mardin Stadium in Antalya on March 27.

Iran, whose participation at the World Cup is still undecided following the invasion of the country by one of the hosts of the championship, the United States, see playing against the Super Eagles as a good test before its games in the Mundial against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.
