Experts seek surveyors’ roles in politics, governance
The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Ogun State chapter, yesterday, called on the state government to prosecute land grabbers in accordance with the provisions of the anti-grabbing law and other extant laws in the state.

Chairman of the NIS, Abiodun Liadi, appealed shortly after a walk by members of the association across major streets in Abeokuta to mark 2026 Global Surveyors’ Day, themed: “Surveyors Challenges In Multi-Sectoral Growth.”

Liadi, who raised alarm over a series of attacks on members by land grabbers in the state, said that it was high time the government acted in line with the laws and began prosecution of land grabbers.

In another development, surveyors in Lagos State have been called upon to take active roles in politics and governance as a professional responsibility.

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, led the call during the 2026 yearly general meeting and luncheon of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Lagos State branch, themed “Politics and Governance: Enhancing Value-Driven Leadership in the Professional and Political Landscape.”

Wahab, who was represented by an official in the ministry, Adewusi Ademola, emphasised that professionals in politics must steer value-driven governance, saying, “Who gets what, when, and how hinges on leadership quality, which dictates people’s quality of life.”

He, however, lamented the absence of key professionals in the built environment in governance, advising that their experiences are vital ingredients in developing the state.

Also speaking, Chairman of APPSN, Lagos State branch, Afolabi Olaoluwa, said the gathering was more than just a statutory requirement.

According to him, it is the cornerstone of the collective spirit to reflect on the journey over the year, urging them to seize the opportunity for constructive dialogue while fostering innovation, collaboration and professional development.

The Guest of Honour and Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State branch, Adedeji Olanrewaju, said the theme was timely, as integrity and accountability produce leaders.

He urged surveyors to promote best practices, mentor young professionals and remain committed to the growth of the profession, as well as promote excellence in leadership.

Also, National Chairman of APPSN and Special Guest of Honour, Simepiriye Kalio, said the theme was a call for surveyors to rise from their slumber as professionals to compete politically, administratively and industrially, as well as take positions in the higher stages.
