Again, electrical spark hits Lagos airport

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)

Operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos were temporarily disrupted today, following an electrical spark at the airport’s temporary Terminal Three (T3).

The electrical spark, which resulted in smoke emission, was the second of such occurrence in the last five weeks.

The last electrical fault, which occurred on February 23, 2026, led to a massive fire outbreak at the Old International Terminal One of the airport.

It also led to destruction of assets and properties, especially of concessionaires and sister agencies of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The latest incident, according to FAAN’s statement, occurred at about 14:05 in one of the operational offices at the temporary terminal and triggered smoke emission.

FAAN said that emergency response team from the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) was immediately deployed to the scene to contained the situation before it could escalate further.

The incident led to diversion of all flights from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, while passengers were advised to take note of the change.

“Electrical maintenance is currently ongoing to ensure that all electrical systems are functioning optimally ahead of the Terminal’s reopening,” FAAN said in a statement.

The latest incident comes barely five weeks after a fire outbreak at the same airport.
