In recognition of their academic excellence, 21 students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), have been inducted into the Ndili Foundation Scholarship leadership and academic programme.
The students, drawn from various departments, would enjoy full tuition coverage, mentorship, and support to help them become future leaders and excel academically.
Speaking at the induction ceremony, the foundation’s Director of Scholarships and Grants Directorate, Prof. Petra Nnamani, urged the scholars to live up to the ideals of excellence, leadership and responsibility.
“Don’t let anything bring you down and always stay passionate, intentional and driven as you are today,” Nnamani stated.
He disclosed that the students were selected based on their academic records, adding that the scholarship was intended to support them and society at large.
Chairman of the foundation, Dr Amaechi Ndili, described the scholarship as a responsibility and urged beneficiaries to make a meaningful impact
“You must never waste your gifts on living a small life,” which he said, consumes much, but contributes little,” he said
He explained that the programme was designed to raise young Africans who see education as a tool for responsibility, rather than personal escape.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, described the event as a celebration of excellence, hard work and vision.
He noted that the first cohort comprises 21 students out of a planned 50 beneficiaries, and commended the foundation for providing tuition, accommodation, stipends and mentorship.
While charging the scholars to maintain their academic prowess, Ortuanya reminded that the scholarship is not just a free ticket to a degree, but a seal of excellence.
“It places a responsibility on you for sound character, unwavering values and the initiative to become change agents.”
He further enjoined them to take full advantage of mentorship and leadership opportunities.
“I charge you to utilise this opportunity fully, engage with your mentors and build responsible relationships within the university community,” he said.
Delivering the keynote address, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof Anthony Attama, urged the students to pursue competence, creativity and character, reminding them that a certificate alone is not enough in today’s world.
Attama also encouraged the students to go beyond passing exams to mastering their disciplines and contributing to societal development.
