Former Nigerian and African long jump champion, Yusuf Alli, is convinced that Team Nigeria will achieve its greatest Commonwealth Games success in Glasgow, Scotland, later this year.
Alli, a national record holder, returned from a preparatory assignment in Glasgow a few days ago, praising both the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade for entrusting him with the role of Chef de Mission for Team Nigeria for the Commonwealth Games. He said his role as Chef de Mission for Team Nigeria at the Games is a privilege rather than an entitlement.
“It takes good leaders who understand how sports is run to make appointments they believe can deliver both their objectives and that of the country, especially that of Mr President, Bola Tinubu,” he said.
Alli’s national long jump record of 8.27m, set at the 1989 African Championships in Lagos, still stands today. He is also a former African, World University and Commonwealth Games champion.
The 1983 World Athletics Championships finalist, who previously captained Team Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games and served as General Coordinator four years ago, emphasised the importance of continuity and experience.
Alli, who also heads Nigeria’s elite athletes’ performance board, highlighted that his role as Chef de Mission extends far beyond ceremonial duties.
“As Chef de Mission, I am responsible for leading the delegation, ensuring athletes’ welfare, coordinating logistics, and serving as the link between Team Nigeria and the Games’ organisers. I oversee travel, accommodation, accreditation, and training schedules, while also safeguarding the athletes’ wellbeing and morale.
“My duty is to provide stability, resolve challenges quickly, and ensure our athletes can focus purely on performance,” Ali stated.
Reflecting on past achievements, Alli expressed confidence in surpassing Nigeria’s record haul.
“Four years ago in Birmingham where I was the General Coordinator, Nigeria recorded her best-ever performance at the Games with 12 gold medals and 35 medals overall, better than the 11 gold medals recorded in 1994, 2010 and 2014. This time, with the dynamic duo at the NSC and the right environment, I am confident we will go even further,” Ali stated.
