The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated tons of food items and building materials to victims of Boko Haram affected by recent multiple bomb blasts in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
According to the commission, the items include thousands of bags and bales of food, clothing, and critical building materials to help displaced persons and survivors rebuild their lives.
Presenting the items on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the NEDC Managing Director, represented by the State Coordinator, Engr. Mohammed Wasinda, said the intervention was part of the commission’s emergency response mandate to alleviate the suffering of citizens following the recent attacks across various local government areas in the state.
He highlighted that the relief materials for victims of the Maiduguri blasts include 2,000 bags and cartons each of rice and spaghetti, as well as 2,000 blankets.
Wasinda directed the chairpersons of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Area to coordinate the distribution of the items through appropriate state channels.
He further disclosed that the commission also donated 1,000 bundles of roofing sheets, 5,000 ceiling boards, 10,000 pieces of timber, 2,000 iron rods, and 8,000 packets of nails to support reconstruction efforts.
The coordinator urged that all items be handed over to the Borno State Government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), which will oversee distribution to ensure the materials reach the most affected households.
Beyond material support, the NEDC has verified a list of more than 150 victims and survivors of the Maiduguri bombings for cash assistance.
According to Wasinda, families of deceased victims will receive ₦50,000 each as funeral support, while injured survivors will get ₦30,000 each to assist with medical and personal needs.
He added that the distribution plan also covers affected communities in Konduga, Gwoza, and Kukawa local government areas, including Ngoshe, a border community with Cameroon.
Items allocated to these areas include 1,800 bags of rice, 1,800 cartons of spaghetti, as well as thousands of mats and wrappers, to be distributed through local government authorities and members of the Borno State House of Assembly.
