The US Embassy in Abuja has suspended visa appointments, the US mission in Nigeria announced on Thursday, directing applicants to check their emails for rescheduled dates.

“U.S. Embassy Abuja is closed for visa appointments. Applicants should check their email for details on rescheduled appointments,” the mission said in a post on X.

Visa operations at the US Consulate General in Lagos will continue unaffected, it added. American citizen services remain available in emergencies and by appointment.

The announcement comes as the embassy faces ongoing security concerns in the Nigerian capital. Earlier security alerts had cited the potential for protests and other risks, prompting temporary closures for routine business in previous instances.

No further details were provided on the duration of the current visa suspension or the precise reasons behind it.

The US State Department maintains a Level 3 reconsider travel advisory for Nigeria, citing crime, terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest.
