Umuobuna community honours Queen Agwu as matron for her enduring impact

In a show of cultural affirmation and communal unity, the leaders in Umuobuna village in Uburu, Ohaozara Council, Ebonyi State have publicly recognised the enduring influence of Dr. Queen Elizabeth Chikamnele Agwu, as Matron of Unyom Umuobuna.

The leaders honoured her in a ceremony that observers describe as both symbolic and transformative.

The event marked a departure from the norm, where traditional titles are often held without formal public acknowledgment. Instead, the gathering was convened specifically to affirm Agwu’s longstanding role as a moral guide within the community.

Though she has not been involved in the day-to-day administration of the women’s group – responsibilities typically handled by its internal leadership – Agwu has, over the years, maintained a strong influence through mentorship, personal example, and the promotion of family values.

Community leaders noted that the purpose of the gathering was not to appoint or assign authority, but to recognise and validate the impact she has consistently made on the lives of women and families in Umuobuna.

In a culturally significant gesture, the men collectively entrusted their wives, known as “Unyom,” to her continued guidance. The act, they said, reflects confidence in her discipline, character, and lifestyle as a model for strengthening homes and fostering unity.

Observers at the event described the moment as a convergence of respect and responsibility, where an existing role was elevated through public endorsement, effectively institutionalising her influence within the social framework of the community.

The ceremony also featured contributions from her daughter, Dr. Princess Ezinne Agwu, who introduced educational and empowerment initiatives aimed at supporting community development.
Through the Cletus Ngene-Agwu Educational Foundation, she presented ₦400,000 to sponsor university education for four selected students. In addition, she extended skill acquisition opportunities to women and youth under the TreasureWells Youth Empowerment Foundation, with a pledge to support beneficiaries upon completion of their training.

Residents who spoke at the event commended the combined impact of moral leadership and practical intervention, noting that the initiatives reflect a shared commitment to both preserving cultural values and advancing socio-economic development.

The event concluded on a note of optimism, with many expressing hope that the recognition of leadership and the introduction of empowerment programmes would contribute to sustained progress within the community
