Betara pledges to build NAWOJ secretariat, endorses WINSEC 2026

House of Representatives

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Aliyu Mukhtar Betara, has pledged to deliver a befitting National Secretariat for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Abuja, while also endorsing the forthcoming Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026.

Betara gave the assurance on Thursday when he received a delegation of NAWOJ led by its National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit to his office.

Responding to the association’s request for support towards the development of its newly acquired land in Lugbe, Abuja, the lawmaker promised to take personal responsibility for the project and ensure its realisation.

“I will build it for you. I assure you, I will personally ensure that NAWOJ has a befitting national secretariat,” Betara said.

He further disclosed plans to liaise with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to secure the necessary institutional backing for the project.

“I will discuss with the Minister and ensure that this is taken up. I will talk to him so that he will give the necessary support and we can move this forward,” he added.

Betara, however, urged the leadership of NAWOJ to ensure that all required documentation is in place ahead of formal engagements, stressing that due process would facilitate quicker approvals and implementation.

In addition to the infrastructure commitment, the lawmaker endorsed the Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026, an initiative of NAWOJ in collaboration with the African Independent Television (AIT), aimed at recognising courage, dedication, and sacrifice in national security service.

He described the initiative as timely and impactful, noting its importance in highlighting the contributions of women in the security sector.

The lawmaker also commended NAWOJ for its role in promoting professional journalism and amplifying women’s voices across the country, while expressing appreciation for his nomination for an award by the association.

Earlier, Ibrahim said the visit was to formally inform Betara of his nomination in recognition of his contributions to constituency development, particularly in women and youth empowerment.

She also disclosed that the association had secured a Certificate of Occupancy for land in Lugbe, Abuja, designated for the construction of its national secretariat.
Betara, in his response, expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the association, pledging sustained collaboration.

The development underscores growing engagement between policymakers and the media in strengthening institutional capacity and advancing gender inclusion within Nigeria’s democratic and development landscape.
