Akanbi warns politicians against selfish ambition above Nigeria

Dr. James Akanbi

As 2027 election is gathering momentum, the General Overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM), Dr. James Akanbi, has called on politicians to guide against personal interests and put the nation first, adding that their actions should strengthen the nation, rather than weaken it.

Speaking at the 2026 Covenant Day programme of the church held in Lagos, the cleric called on politicians to exercise patriotism in their pursuit of power, particularly as the coming 2027 elections.

In a statement issued at the end of the event, Akanbi noted that if their actions are not controlled could threaten the nation’s stability, unity and peaceful co-existence.

The cleric acknowledged that political alignments and realignments are normal in a democracy, however, cautioned that such strategies must not come at the expense of national peace, security and the collective interest of Nigerians.

He said:”I urge fellow church leaders to conduct themselves with utmost dignity and spiritual discipline. While I am not opposed to clergy participation in civic and political matters, such involvement must reflect godly character and wisdom. The Church must avoid a repeat of the 2023 experience marked by reckless political utterances and questionable prophecies that brought disrepute to the body of Christ.”

Akanbi said that the Church must continue to serve as a moral compass for the nation by promoting peace, truth, and righteousness, especially, during politically sensitive periods.

Calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and committed to the unity and progress of the country, GOMERM‘s General Overseer charged them to act with wisdom, restraint, and a deep sense of patriotism and ensure a stable and prosperous Nigeria, which according to him, is a collective responsibility.
