A dispatch rider has died in a road crash along the Motorways inward Estate axis of Alapere, Lagos, after an empty tanker struck him at high speed.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tanker, branded “NIPCO” and bearing registration number TTN-776ZQ, was travelling at excessive speed when it collided with the rider. The impact killed him at the scene.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived promptly and contained the situation as a group of dispatch riders confronted the tanker driver in anger over the incident.
LASTMA officers rescued the injured driver and handed him over to personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), who took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Operatives from the Alausa Police Station were also deployed to restore calm and disperse the crowd.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged tanker drivers and other motorists to comply with traffic regulations.
“This unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance and collective responsibility among all road users to safeguard lives,” he said.
The tanker and the wreckage of the motorcycle have been handed over to the police, while investigations continue.
