A dispatch rider, yesterday, lost his life after being hit by a fully loaded HOWO diesel tanker along the Cele Bridge axis of the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.
Security reports indicate that the tanker, bearing registration number RBC 38 XF, collided violently with the motorcycle, trapping the rider beneath the vehicle. The victim died instantly at the scene.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly responded and cordoned off the crash site with cones and caution tape to prevent secondary accidents and ensure the safety of other road users on the busy expressway.
The tanker was impounded by LASTMA, though the driver reportedly fled upon realising the severity of the incident.
Officers from the Ijesha Police Division arrived shortly after to assume control of the scene, beginning an investigation. The body of the deceased, along with the damaged motorcycle and impounded tanker, was handed over to the police for further action and prosecution.
The victim’s remains were carefully removed from beneath the tanker and transported to a morgue in Yaba.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as deeply distressing, and urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
