As part of efforts to tackle the disconnect between classroom learning and practical application, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, has identified the Geosciences Centre of Excellence as a key driver of industry collaboration.
Ogunsola disclosed this at the unveiling of the centre, noting that the project is a collaborative effort funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited ( SNEPCo), and the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), a legacy positioned to enhance research, innovation and manpower.
The centre comprises three suspended floors, comprising the reception, workshops, laboratories, lecture theatre, museum, simulation laboratory, library, offices, sit-out, and convenience facilities.
The vice-chancellor noted that the project underpins the university’s drive to foster industry-academia collaboration and bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application.
She added that the project traversed the tenures of four vice-chancellors, since it started in 2010, during the administration of Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe, to Prof. Rahaman Bello, who strengthened the conceptual framework by repositioning it as an industry–university linkage centre, to Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, when the design and scope were optimised for improved efficiency, feasibility, and alignment with institutional priorities.
“At UNILAG, we don’t give up or abandon legacies. We build on the works of previous managements. Each vice-chancellor since the 10th has carried the vision forward, so you can rest assured that your investment is safe with us,” Ogunsola stated.
She stated that the centre will serve as a vessel for interdisciplinary research, fostering collaboration across diverse fields of Geosciences, engineering and computer science, while physics and environmental sciences will offer opportunities to develop capacity, unlock new avenues of inquiry and support scholars in pushing the boundaries of knowledge.
Besides, Ogunsola stated that it will equip students with critical skills and a forward-thinking mindset necessary to thrive through hands-on learning with advanced teaching technology, simulation laboratory and library facilities for research and knowledge sharing, as well as serve as a hub for studying fields such as reservoir modelling, seismic interpretation, and core analysis to prepare students for the energy industry.
She added that the university, in collaboration with the donor, has articulated a clear sustainability framework for the centre, incorporating long-term institutional funding commitments, strategic industry partnerships, periodic technology upgrades, and structured maintenance provisions to ensure the facility remains operationally efficient, academically relevant, and globally competitive over the long term.
The Managing Director of SNEPCo, Ronald Adams, said the centre reflects the company’s commitment to investing in Nigerian talent, adding that it would serve as a national hub for geoscience learning, research and industry engagement.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Felix Ogbe, represented by Abayomi Bamidele, said the board would continue to prioritise local content through human capital development.
He added that the centre must be fully utilised and maintained to global standards, with measurable outcomes in training, research and industry support.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC Limited, Bayo Ojulari, represented by Olanrewaju Igandan, urged students to maximise the opportunities provided by the facility for academic and professional growth.
