Garo to appear before assembly committee for screening Monday

The Kano State House of Assembly has confirmed the receipt of a letter transmitted by Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf requesting for the screening and subsequent confirmation of Murtala Sule Garo as deputy governor.

Speaker of the House, Hon Jibrin Ismaila Falgore disclosed this on Wednesday while presenting the executive bill to the plenary.

Governor Yusuf had transmitted the name of Garo before the assembly on Tuesday as the choice nominee for the vacant seat of the deputy governor following the resignation of Comrade Aminu Abussalam Gwarzo last month.

In the letter read by the Speaker, Governor Yusuf highlighted the good character of the nominee, his vast experience, exposure and the support he has been according the APC and the development of Kano in several capacities he has held.

“The nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists”. Hon. Falgore read.

Following the reading of the letter, the Speaker announced the constitution of an ad hoc committee to screen the nominee.

The committee, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, comprises the Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Majority Leader, Majority Whip, and members representing Fagge, Sumaila, Warawa, Dawakin Kudu and Tudun Wada constituencies, among others. The committee is expected to invite Garo for screening and report back to the House on Monday.

According to a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, earlier on Wednesday, the 48-year-old Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions.

He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to Kano State Governor and elected Kabo Local Government Chairman.

He also served as Chairman of ALGON Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections. His nomination is part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in Kano State.
