Stakeholders in Abia Central Senatorial District have thrown their weight behind Sam Onuigbo ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly primaries, urging party leaders to endorse his bid for the Senate.
Rising from a strategic meeting in Umuahia, representatives from the six local government areas of the zone—led by Chief Augustine Anyaegbu—said their position followed a careful assessment of all aspirants’ credentials, political strength, and legislative performance.
They argued that Onuigbo stands out based on his record in the House of Representatives, where he served two terms representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency between 2015 and 2023.
He is widely credited for sponsoring the landmark Climate Change Act 2021, a legislation that elevated Nigeria’s profile in global climate governance.
According to the stakeholders, Onuigbo’s contributions have given the All Progressives Congress visibility both nationally and internationally, especially in a state where the party has historically struggled for dominance.
They also highlighted his loyalty to the APC, noting that he joined the party during its formative years in Abia when it lacked structure and influence.
In contrast, they described some other aspirants as “latter-day progressives” who embraced the party only after it gained traction.
The group stressed that beyond loyalty, the party must prioritise candidates with electoral appeal who can strengthen the prospects of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the state.
In a notable point, the stakeholders praised Onuigbo’s decision to serve only two terms in the House despite no constitutional limit, describing it as a mark of integrity and fairness.
They expressed confidence that he would replicate the same discipline if elected to the Senate, arguing that eight years is sufficient for impactful representation.
They further urged APC’s national leadership to avoid internal practices that could alienate long-standing members, warning against what they termed a “baboon dey work, monkey dey chop” culture.
The stakeholders also commended the party’s national chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, for his stance on protecting the interests of loyal party members and ensuring internal equity
