The push for greater female and youth representation in Nigeria’s politics faces a fresh test in Imo State, as Dr. Ngozi Okafor declares her bid for the House of Representatives seat for Ideato North Federal Constituency.
Running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Okafor’s entry sharpens focus on whether political parties are translating inclusion pledges into real backing for candidates.
An organisational psychologist with over three decades of experience, Okafor is the National Director of Media Relations and Stakeholder Engagement at the City Boy Movement.
She has also earned recognition in youth development through her University of Abuja-based foundation, which has supported thousands of students with scholarships, mentorship and career guidance.
She links her ambition to recent policy measures she believes signal gradual economic recovery, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), small business support schemes through SMEDAN and SEDC, and the federal government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative aimed at reducing transport costs.
“Nigeria is on a recovery path. It is tough, but the outcome is worth the effort,” she said.
With the 2027 elections approaching, attention is now on whether the APC will rally behind aspirants like Okafor or stick with established political patterns.
For Ideato North, her candidacy could serve as an early gauge of how far the party—and Nigeria’s political system—are willing to go in turning inclusion from rhetoric into reality.
