National Troupe lights up Soyinka Centre for dance day

National Troupe

The National Troupe amphitheatre, nestled within the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos, was transformed into a vibrant sanctuary of motion last weekend when the troupe hosted the World Dance Day.

In a powerful display of artistry, the troupe turned the venue into a hive of creative energy and rhythmic storytelling.

Moving beyond tradition, the 2026 edition stood out for its remarkable collaborative spirit. The event was organised in partnership with a formidable lineup of creative pillars, including the Lagos State Arts Council, the Guild of Nigerian Dancers (GOND), and several dynamic creative collectives such as Wao Factor, Gifted Steppers, Tribe 1, Black Edge, Funso Arts and Jayden Expression.

The atmosphere was electric, drawing a diverse audience of dancers, culture icons, theatre practitioners, academics, and dedicated supporters of the troupe.

The evening was further enriched by inspiring messages from theatre practitioners who underscored the importance of dance as both an art form and a cultural force.

Among them were National President of GOND, Segun Adefila; National Secretary of GOND, Tairu Ajibode; National President of the Guild of Theatre Drummers (GOTHAD), Isioma Williams and Dr. Yeside Lawal of the Department of Theatre Arts, Lagos State University (LASU).

While World Dance Day serves as a global tribute to the universal language of movement, the troupe’s 2026 showcase added a uniquely hopeful dimension.

A major highlight of the evening was the extraordinary performances by children and teenagers, signaling a vibrant and promising future for professional dance in Nigeria.

In her address, the Artistic Director/CEO of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Hajja Kaltume Bulama Gana, spoke passionately about the transformative power of dance.

She emphasised its role in fostering creativity, promoting national unity, and enhancing physical well-being, while also serving as a vital vehicle for preserving and showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

Looking ahead, she expressed optimism that future editions would grow even more expansive, as the Troupe continues its mission to elevate the art of dance on the global stage.
