Civil society groups form coalition for participatory governance

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

No fewer than nine civil society and civic technology organisations have launched the Coalition for Participatory Governance (CPG), an initiative designed to bolster transparency, accountability, and service delivery across Nigeria, starting at the local council level.

The coalition, convened by the TriAfrica Empowerment Foundation and supported by BudgIT and Lagos Island Connect, includes the Africa Leadership Group, The Lagos Civil Society Participation for Development (LACSOP), To Build a Nation (TBAN), Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), the Centre for Fiscal Transparency, and the Nigeria Diaspora Coalition for Change (NDCC).

The coalition, which believes it can build a stronger foundation for national development, plans to hold its inaugural town hall meeting tomorrow, May 7, 2026. The event will introduce the CPG’s governance agenda and facilitate dialogue on accountability challenges affecting Lagos Island and the broader Nigerian landscape.

IN another development, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, yesterday, informed 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps Members that they would take part in the 2027 general elections.

The DG stated this in Abuja, while addressing corps members deployed to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa State at their orientation camps.

He urged them to uphold neutrality and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He stressed that, as stakeholders in the NYSC scheme, corps members must always remain non-partisan, including in their social media engagements.

Nafiu, who further urged the corps members to make friends among themselves and in fact treasure the relationships as they may have endless positive possibilities, charged them to use social media with a sense of responsibility.

He said that the service year had provided them with the opportunity of exposure to the different parts and people of Nigeria so that they could better understand and appreciate Nigeria’s diversity.
