The Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspects allegedly linked to the possession, circulation and production of counterfeit Euro currency, recovering 89 pieces of suspected fake €100 notes with a face value of €8,900.

The suspects were arrested following a patrol operation by police operatives around the Labo-Wesley area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

According to him, the incident occurred on September 1, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., when operatives on township patrol intercepted three men travelling on a motorcycle.

He said a search of the suspects led to the recovery of 89 pieces of suspected counterfeit €100 notes valued at €8,900.

The suspects were identified as Tijani Saheed, 50, who was allegedly found in possession of the suspected counterfeit currency; Oni Oladapo, 67, who allegedly supplied the money; Adebayo Saheed, 52, the second passenger on the motorcycle; and Hammed Karemu, 25, the motorcycle rider.

Ayanlade said the circumstances surrounding the involvement of each of the suspects were being subjected to further investigation.

He added that during interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to the crime and led police operatives to the location where the suspected counterfeit currency was allegedly purchased.

He said a forensic search of the premises led to the recovery of exhibits suspected to have been used in producing the counterfeit notes, as well as the arrest of the alleged producer.

This, he said, brought the number of suspects arrested in connection with the case to six.

The PPRO said all six suspects were currently in police custody and cooperating with investigators, adding that they would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism.

He assured members of the public that the command remained committed to disrupting criminal networks and protecting residents and legitimate businesses from economic and financial crimes.

The command urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the police through the appropriate channels.
