Three persons arrested for unlawful disposing of waste

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has confirmed the arrest of three persons for unlawful disposing of waste.

In a statement on Sunday, Wahab said their arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the government to eliminate illegal waste dumping within Lagos State.

“As part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal waste dumping within the state, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team conducted an overnight surveillance operation from May 8 to 9, 2026, in the Ketu Alapere axis,” he wrote on his official X account.

“During this operation, three individuals were apprehended for unlawfully disposing of waste in unauthorized locations.”

To deter further misconduct, Wahab said they were all traced to their residences to investigate the motives behind their actions.

Subsequent investigations revealed that their properties lack proper waste storage facilities and that they have failed to register their properties with the designated Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.

The commissioner added that all documented properties have been forwarded to the LAWMA legal department for further legal action.

Additionally, Wahab stated that all identified black spots were effectively mitigated.

To curb dirts and enhance cleanliness around the city, the Lagos State Government ordered the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise on April 25, 2026.

Announcing the resumption of the exercise, Wahab said last month: “Let us show Lagos and the world that we are ready to take ownership of our environment. Two hours. One Saturday each month. A cleaner, healthier, flood-free Lagos for all of us.”
