Kaduna Govt on high alert over KASU’s looming strike

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, is set again to down tools if some of its demands are not met by the end of May 2026.

Speaking on behalf of ASUU, a member of the media committee, Dr. Usman Sadiq, said in an interview that “so many demands before the government have not been fulfilled since the last time we sat down in negotiation table with government.”

According to him “We now felt the promises made to us to suspend our last strike has not been met. We are now been pushed to go back to the trenches”.

He cited the non implentation of the 2009 agreement the union reached with the Federal Government is yet to be implemented by the state government.

“As of today, most state governments in the North have implemented the 2009 agreement, but in KASU we don’t know when the state government will fullfil this very important aspect” he said.

Besides, another area of concern, he explained , “is the non-implementation of promotion arrears”, saying “many lecturers who were promoted have not received the corresponding salary increment for their new level; some were promoted since three years ago”.

According to him, the current situation where the University can not operate expect it seek clearance from an authorized body is slowing down and rendering the University ineffective.

“We have to send requests if we want anything and usually this takes time. You can image if our labs want an urgent attention. We have to wait for approval. A university cannot operate like that,” he said.

“This university used to be one of the best state universities in the country. Staff training was vigorously pursued then . Before, if any staff had an issue with their salary, they could just walk to the bursary and everything will be solved But with the current situation, many staff have pending issues,” he added.

Sadiq further stressed, “ indeed, the current economic suffocation and lack of motivation, many reliable and competent lecturers have left the university. Many are planning to leave,”

“More worrisome is the fact that 80 percent of our professors have parked their vehicles and can’t drive to work”, he said.

However, inspite of their concerns, the ASUU official commended the government for clearing withheld salaries, saying, “that’s the area we have to commend the government.”

He said their patience is running out, while noting, “If by the end of May 2026 nothing is forthcoming, we’ll be forced to embark on strike.”
