The launch of Echoes of Survival, the autobiography of Lolo Patricia Mgbenwelu, was marked by emotion, celebration, and heartfelt tributes as dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers gathered at the prestigious Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

The event, which was originally conceived as a formal unveiling of the book, evolved into a moving celebration of the life, resilience, and enduring legacy of the 83-year-old Jamaican-born matriarch whose remarkable journey has spanned continents, cultures, and generations.

Married for over six decades to renowned legal luminary, Chief Barr. Peter Chukwuemeka Mgbenwelu — widely regarded as one of the oldest practising lawyers in Imo State and often referred to as the “Cock of the Imo Bar” — Lolo Patricia Mgbenwelu was celebrated not only as an accomplished author, but also as a devoted wife, mother, mentor, and woman of profound faith.

Among the distinguished guests at the event were the Jamaican High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Lincoln C. Downer; the First Lady of Ogun State, Her Excellency Dr. Bamidele Abiodun; former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke; business leaders, diplomats, family members, and close associates of the Mgbenwelu family.

Guests were visibly moved as speaker after speaker paid glowing tribute to the author’s courage, generosity, humility, resilience, and unwavering devotion to God and family. Emotional testimonies from her husband, children, relatives, and friends painted the portrait of a woman whose life has profoundly impacted many across generations.

In his remarks, Chief Mgbenwelu described his wife as one of God’s greatest blessings to him and his family, praising her strength, wisdom, and steadfast support throughout their 64 years of marriage.

Overcome with emotion at several moments during his speech, the respected legal icon urged families, particularly women and mothers, to read the book and draw inspiration from the lessons, struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs chronicled in its pages.

The Jamaican High Commissioner, who served as Special Guest of Honour, described the author as “one of Jamaica’s finest daughters” and “a proud ambassador of Jamaica in Nigeria.”

Speaking on the significance of the book, Mr. Downer described Echoes of Survival as “authentic, audacious, and inspirational,” adding that it possessed all the qualities of a bestseller.

According to him, the memoir compellingly captures the author’s journey from her childhood in Jamaica, through her years in the United Kingdom, to her eventual life in Nigeria, while exploring themes of faith, resilience, family, love, cultural identity, and survival.

He particularly highlighted the author’s deep spiritual grounding and referenced her survival of the historic Kendal train crash in Jamaica as evidence of what he described as a purpose-driven life protected by divine grace.

Reflecting on the Nigerian Civil War and other personal hardships detailed in the memoir, the envoy noted that Lolo Patricia Mgbenwelu’s story was ultimately one of hope, perseverance, and triumph over adversity.

He commended the author for documenting her experiences for future generations and concluded with prayers for her continued health and inspiration.

In her goodwill message, Ogun State First Lady, Dr. Bamidele Abiodun, described memoirs such as Echoes of Survival as important repositories of history, wisdom, and cultural memory.

She praised the author’s courage in documenting the complexities of her life journey and described the work as “a roadmap of grit, resilience, and determination.”

Dr. Abiodun said one of the most inspiring aspects of the story was the decision of a young Jamaican woman, more than six decades ago, to leave her homeland and build a life, family, and legacy in Nigeria.

According to her, the author’s life represents “a beautiful tapestry of two cultures woven together by love and survival.”

In a brief address, Lolo Patricia Mgbenwelu dedicated the book to God Almighty and expressed profound gratitude to her family, friends, and supporters for their encouragement throughout the writing process.
