FCT NUJ advocates mental health support for Journalists

FCT NUJ walk

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has urged media practitioners to prioritise their mental health and adopt healthier work habits amid rising workplace pressure in the journalism profession

Ike made the call yesterday during a health walk organised as part of activities marking the 2026 NUJ Press Week in Abuja, with the theme: “Mental Health and Stress Management in High-Pressure Work Environments.”

She said the theme reflects the daily realities of journalists, who often work under intense pressure to meet deadlines, break stories, and navigate the challenges of reporting in a politically and socially demanding environment.

“We all know the challenges of being journalists in Abuja. We work late into the night to break news. We face danger to report the truth. We deal with angry leaders, fake news, and tight deadlines. All this builds up stress that can make us tired, sad, or even sick. Our minds and bodies need care, just like our stories need facts,” she said.

Ike described the health walk as more than a fitness activity, noting that it was designed to promote mental wellness, relaxation, and unity among journalists.

She stressed the need for journalists to adopt mental health-friendly routines, including taking breaks, seeking counselling when necessary, and maintaining healthy lifestyles.

Ike said: “That is why this health walk matters so much. It is not just exercise. It is a way to clear our heads, build strength, and support each other. As we walk together through the streets of Abuja, let’s share our worries, laugh, and plan better days. Simple steps like this can fight burnout and keep us sharp for the job we love,”.

“We must be alive for that story to be heard or read”.

She urged media organisations to provide counselling services, rest periods, and safer work environments for practitioners.

The NUJ FCT Chairman also commended the Press Week planning committee for organising the event, as well as sponsors and participants who joined the health walk.

“Let’s walk with energy. Let’s make this Press Week one to remember. Together, we will stay healthy, happy, and ready to serve Nigeria,” she said.
