Alleged Coup Plot: Court hears testimony on suspected attempt to breach Presidential villa security

Federal High Court Abuja

Proceedings at a Federal High Court have continued to shed light on the ongoing trial involving alleged participants in an attempted coup plot, with a Department of State Services (DSS) witness presenting details of what investigators described as a coordinated plan involving senior military personnel.

Testifying before the court, the witness alleged that one of the accused officers, identified as Col. Mohammed Maaji, played a central role in discussions and operational planning that reportedly included attempts to force access into the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to the testimony, intelligence gathered by security agencies suggested that the group allegedly sought to mobilise personnel and resources in furtherance of actions considered subversive to the Nigerian state.

The court was told that surveillance and subsequent investigations by security operatives led to the arrest of several individuals suspected to be linked to the alleged plot, with digital communications and operational movements forming part of the evidence being presented.

However, defence counsel have continued to challenge aspects of the prosecution’s claims, insisting that the allegations are being misinterpreted and that the accused officers remain entitled to the presumption of innocence under the law.

The case has drawn attention within security and political circles, given the sensitivity of allegations involving attempts to breach presidential security infrastructure and the involvement of serving and retired military personnel.

Judicial observers note that the matter remains at the evidential stage, with the court yet to make any determination on the guilt or otherwise of the defendants.

The trial has been adjourned for continuation of hearing as both prosecution and defence teams prepare further submissions.
