Your next Lagos hangout does not have to revolve around food and drinks. Pick up a racket, grab a ball or challenge your friends to a game. These Lagos spots offer plenty of ways to play.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball has a way of turning strangers into teammates within minutes. Lekki Volleyball Club brings professional and recreational players together for regular sessions on the Island, making it suitable for beginners and experienced players. Festac Volleyball Club offers a similar community on the Mainland, with its court around 24 Road, FHA Field, Festac Town. The University of Lagos also has volleyball facilities used for games and training. Since university access and club schedules sometimes change, confirm the playing time before leaving home.
GOLF
If golf has always looked intimidating from a distance, Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate offers a calm place to start. The estate, located along the Lekki Epe Expressway, has an 18-hole championship course, a smaller course and a driving range for practice. Beginners can book lessons, while experienced golfers can test their skills on the main course. Ikoyi Club 1938 also has an established golf section, but it is a private members’ club. Non-members should confirm guest access before arriving with their clubs.
BASKETBALL
You do not need to shoot like a professional before stepping onto a basketball court. Gripps Breed Basketball, MPAC Sports Nigeria and Lagos Tigers Basketball Academy offer structured coaching for young players and adults who want to improve their skills. Those who prefer a casual game can explore the basketball court at the University of Lagos. The American Cola Creative Court in Ilupeju also gives residents a public space to train, compete and connect. The recently renovated court now serves as a multipurpose space for basketball, youth culture and creative activities.
TENNIS
Tennis gives you a full workout without making exercise feel like punishment. The Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, founded in 1895, remains one of the city’s most recognisable tennis institutions. It is located at Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island. Players can also explore the tennis facilities at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Ikoyi Club 1938 and the University of Lagos Sports Centre. Hitway Tennis Academy offers personalised coaching for beginners, intermediate players and advanced players across selected Lagos locations. Access rules differ, so contact the club or coach before visiting.
PADEL
Padel has quickly become one of Lagos’ favourite social sports. It combines parts of tennis and squash, but beginners usually find it easier to pick up. Padel X on Cooper Road, Ikoyi, offers court bookings, coaching and organised matches, while The Padel House on Ribadu Road provides courts, equipment and training. Other options include Magic Padel at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Play Padel in Ikoyi and Landmark, and The Padel Court on Kusenla Road, Lekki. Most centres rent rackets and offer beginner sessions, so not owning equipment is no excuse.
GAMES
Someone will always claim they are not competitive until the bowling scores appear. Rufus and Bee at Twinwaters Entertainment Centre in Lekki offer bowling, arcade machines and group games, while Gameland Lagos at The Lekki Coliseum brings together pool, giant Jenga, archery and board games. Upbeat Centre on Admiralty Road is perfect for people who prefer trampolines and wall climbing. On the Mainland, Providha Fun City in Ikeja offers games and rides for children and adults. Funzia World in Lekki Phase 1 combines bumper cars, virtual reality, arcade games and a ball pit, while Enzo Reality at Lekki Town Square Mall caters to virtual reality and arcade lovers.
