The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Mrs. Grace Ogunleye, was on Wednesday reportedly abducted by armed men along the Ipere–Iludun road while returning from an official engagement.

According to early reports, Ogunleye had earlier visited the Ilejemeje Local Government Secretariat before heading toward Ido Ekiti when her vehicle was intercepted by gunmen, who forcefully whisked her away to an unknown location. Her vehicle was later found abandoned by the roadside, sparking concern over her safety.

Attempts to reach her through her mobile phone were unsuccessful, as her line was said to have been switched off shortly after the incident.

Confirming the development, Falade Sunday, Director of Information and Civic Orientation for Ilejemeje LGA, said security agencies were immediately alerted and coordinated efforts were launched to secure her release.

The incident was also confirmed by the spokesperson of the Ekiti State Police Command, Sunday Abutu, who assured that investigations had commenced.

However, in a swift turn of events, the Ekiti State Police Command announced that the abducted vice chairman had been rescued unharmed following a coordinated operation involving multiple security agencies.

According to the police, “Mrs. Ogunleye Grace, the Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government, who was allegedly kidnapped on May 20, 2026, by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums, has been rescued unhurt.”

The statement added that the breakthrough was achieved through a joint operation involving the police, military, and other security agencies, alongside local security outfits, who mounted sustained pressure on the kidnappers.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction and subsequent rescue.

Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to track down the suspects involved in the incident.
