The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has denied rumors claiming the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations for the health sector have been suspended until after the 2027 elections.
In Friday’s statement signed by National Publicity Secretary, Prof Olayinka Atilola, the NMA called the purported reports untrue and baseless.
The post on the NMA’s verified X account also includes an official press statement from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment dated Friday May 22, 2026, confirming that no such suspension exists and reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to continued dialogue with health unions.
“The attention of the NMA NOC has been drawn to a circulating rumor that the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) has been suspended till after the 2027 general elections,” the statement read.
“The NOC, ably led by Dr (Prof) Afekhide Ernest Omoti, wishes to state that such insinuations are untrue and baseless.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the NOC has obtained a written disclaimer from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment to that effect (attached forthwith).
The NMA leadership assured that it remains fully committed to expediting the CBA to improve working conditions for doctors amid Nigeria’s healthcare challenges.
“The NOC is steadfast, unwavering and committed to speedy actualization of the CBA agreement and that has not changed in any way whatsoever,” it added.
