Osun govt alerts residents on heavy rainfall, flooding

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke

The Osun State Government has issued a warning to all residents across the state over the increased risk of heavy rainfall, flash flooding, windstorms, and other extreme weather conditions expected during this period of the rainy season.

The state announced that recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicate it may experience episodes of intense rainfall capable of causing flooding in vulnerable communities, property destruction, traffic disruptions, erosion, collapse of weak structures, and threats to human life if urgent precautionary measures are not taken.

Residents living in flood-prone areas, riverbank communities, low-lying environments, and locations with poor drainage systems are particularly advised to exercise maximum caution.

The government therefore directed all residents to immediately clear blocked drainage channels and waterways around homes, markets, offices, and business premises.

Residents are advised to desist from dumping refuse in drains, canals, and water passages. Residents were also advised to avoid movement during heavy downpours unless necessary.

“Stay away from flooded roads, bridges, and fast-moving water. Secure rooftops, signboards, trees, electric poles, and weak structures against strong winds. Closely monitor children during periods of rainfall and thunderstorms. Immediately report flooding incidents, erosion threats, fallen trees, and drainage blockages to relevant authorities,” the state said.

Parents, school authorities, transport operators, traders, and community leaders were strongly urged to prioritise safety and ensure full compliance with all environmental and emergency advisories.

Relevant government agencies and emergency response teams across the state have been placed on alert and directed to intensify monitoring and response efforts. However, residents must understand that prevention and personal responsibility remain critical in reducing avoidable disasters.

The Osun State Government warned that it will not tolerate activities that worsen environmental hazards, including indiscriminate waste disposal and blockage of drainage systems.

“Residents are therefore advised to treat this warning with utmost seriousness in order to protect lives, families, businesses, and communities,” the state said.
