Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, used the global stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert to draw attention to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
The singer appeared on stage wearing a custom black leather jacket adorned with green buttons bearing the names of pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State. The kidnapping incident, which occurred in May 2026, plunged the nation into mourning and anxiety after armed men launched coordinated attacks on three schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota axis of Oriire Local Government Area, abducting several students and teachers.
The tragedy deepened following reports confirming the death of a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun. A disturbing video later surfaced online, allegedly showing the teacher being beheaded by his captors.
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media and triggered protests by residents, students, and educators, who blocked major roads demanding stronger security for schools and rural communities.Davido used his performance to call for urgent government action. Inscribed boldly on the back of his jacket were the words: “BRING THEM HOME,” a message demanding the rescue of victims still in captivity.
Speaking backstage before his performance, the singer expressed grief over the development and urged both federal and state authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe return of the abducted victims.Beyond music, Davido has earned recognition for his philanthropic efforts and advocacy for social causes.
