Security operatives have arrested a suspected gun runner, identified as Abubakar Muhammad, with several arms and ammunition in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The suspect was apprehended with three AK-47 rifles and two rifle magazines during an intelligence-led operation carried out by security personnel.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Muhammad is an indigene of Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. He was reportedly intercepted while transporting the weapons to Funtua in Katsina State.

According to security sources, the suspect confessed to being involved in arms transactions in collaboration with unidentified individuals based in Maigatari, Jigawa State.

The sources disclosed that Muhammad was instructed to deliver the rifles and magazines to a specific individual in Funtua.

Upon arrest, the suspect reportedly admitted that he collected the weapons in Maigatari and was heading to Katsina State when operatives intercepted him in Gezawa.

Security officials said the arrest followed credible intelligence gathered by the agency, which enabled operatives to track the suspect’s movement and apprehend him before reaching his destination.

Investigations have commenced to uncover those behind the supply chain and wider network involved in the illicit arms trade.

Investigators are working to uncover the routes and methods used in transporting the weapons from their source to their intended destination, with a view to dismantling any wider arms trafficking operation,” a security source said.

The source added that Muhammad remains in custody while further investigations continue.
