Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former spokesman of the Nigerian Army, has died in bandits’ captivity despite efforts by security agencies and government authorities to secure his release.
The death of the retired military officer has drawn attention to the challenges facing security forces in rescuing kidnap victims as armed groups continue to operate across parts of northern Nigeria.
Rabe and his wife, Amina, were abducted on May 30 while travelling along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Katsina State. Their vehicle was ambushed by armed bandits near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area, with their driver reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds during the attack.
In the days that followed, security agencies launched efforts to locate and secure the release of the couple. The Katsina State Government said it worked closely with relevant security formations in attempts to bring the retired general home safely.
However, those efforts failed to produce a breakthrough before tragedy struck.
According to the Katsina State Government, Rabe died while in captivity after suffering complications linked to diabetes and hypertension.
The state government confirmed the development in a statement issued by Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, describing the incident as a major loss to the nation.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said.
Authorities noted that the retired officer’s death was not caused by direct violence from his captors but by health complications that worsened during the period of captivity.
The incident has highlighted the dangers faced by elderly and medically vulnerable kidnap victims, particularly when they are held in remote locations with limited or no access to proper healthcare.
Days after the abduction, the kidnappers released a video showing Rabe and his wife pleading for help. In the recording, the abductors demanded the release of three detained associates and the return of livestock allegedly seized by authorities.
Mrs Rabe appealed to government officials to meet the demands, while the retired general called for dialogue that could secure their freedom.
Despite the pressure generated by the video, the Federal Government maintained its position against negotiating with criminal groups or releasing suspects in custody.
President Bola Tinubu, reacting to the retired general’s death, expressed condolences to the family and the Armed Forces of Nigeria but reiterated that the government would not bow to the demands of kidnappers.
While Rabe did not survive the ordeal, his wife was eventually released and handed over to government officials alongside his remains.
