Tributes poured in from eminent Nigerians on Thursday as renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr. Felix Amasihohu Ekhaguere was laid to rest in Benin City, Edo State, following his death on June 1 at the age of 84.
The funeral service, held at Holy Cross Cathedral, Mission Road, Benin, attracted dignitaries from across the country, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who paid glowing tributes to the late physician’s contributions to medicine, humanity and family life.
Officiating at the funeral mass, Fr. Emmanuel Oviasogie described the deceased as a devout Roman Catholic whose life was marked by faith, service and commitment to humanity. He noted that Ekhaguere was baptised at the Holy Cross Cathedral, the same church where his funeral mass was held.
The cleric also highlighted his active role in the Catholic Church as a member of the Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM), where he served as Grand Knight of the New Benin Subordinate Council and attained the Fourth Degree of the Order.
In his tribute, Vice President Shettima said the death of a parent often leaves an irreplaceable void but urged members of the Ekhaguere family to take solace in the enduring legacy of service left behind by their patriarch.
According to him, the late physician dedicated decades of his life to caring for families and bringing hope to countless patients.
“Through decades of service as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr. Ekhaguere offered hope to families at moments of anxiety, brought joy through the safe arrival of new lives and earned the gratitude of generations whose stories were forever changed by his care,” the Vice President stated.
Also paying tribute, the Olubadan of Ibadanland described the deceased, who was his in-law, as an accomplished physician, distinguished public servant, and respected medical administrator.
Oba Ladoja said the late Ekhaguere, whom he regarded as a twin brother, lived an exemplary life worthy of celebration.
“We knew Dr. Ekhaguere as a distinguished physician and committed family man who balanced his devotion to healing others with an unwavering commitment to his family. The values he instilled are reflected in the lives of his children, including our daughter-in-law, Adesuwa Ladoja,” the monarch said.
In an emotional tribute, his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Sweet Madagwa Ekhaguere, described her late husband as a loving father, grandfather, and dependable provider who carried his responsibilities with quiet strength and cared deeply for the well-being of others.
She recalled their enduring marriage and the support he gave to his family throughout his lifetime.
Dr. Ekhaguere is remembered for his distinguished career in medicine, service to humanity, and commitment to family and faith.
