The Borno State Police Command has impounded 78 vehicles without number plates and other registration requirements in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and the Jere Council in the state.
The command said the impoundments of cars and other unregistered vehicles were made during an intensified ongoing enforcement against vehicles operating without registration number plates, as well as those with concealed, altered, defaced, or otherwise obscured number plates,
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso disclosed: “in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu on sanitised the registration and ownership of vehicles in the state have to be fully implanted across the country.
Daso said since the commencement of the exercise on 10th June 2026, the command has impounded a total of 78 vehicles found in violation of the law.
The owners and operators of the af impounfed vehicles have been duly processed, with appropriate cases already charged before competent courts in accordance with extant laws.
The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, stated that the enforcement exercise is a proactive crime prevention strategy aimed at improving public safety, enhancing intelligence gathering, and denying criminal elements the opportunity to exploit unregistered or improperly identified vehicles in the commission of crimes.
The Commissioner also reiterated that the exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to ensure strict compliance with existing traffic and security regulations.
He urged all vehicle owners to regularize the registration of their vehicles and ensure that approved registration number plates are properly displayed at all times.
The Command further assured members of the public that the enforcement will continue to be conducted professionally, fairly, and with due respect for the rights of all citizens. Motorists are advised to comply with the law to avoid sanctions.
