President Bola Tinubu has directed the management of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) for the immediate reinforcement of security personnel of the Institute.
Tinubu who postulated that the participants are the future of the country, also ordered that the institute should provide more powerful security forces and work out the modality to reach his office within the next 72 hours.
The president was speaking yesterday at the institute through the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima when he visited the institution to commiserate with the institute over the recent attack by terrorists that claimed the lives of two military men and a police officer.
Tinubu also directed that the institute should construct perimeter fencing round all its blocks as he will provide perimeter lights.
On arrival from the Jos Airport, the vice president headed straight to the scene of the attack where he was told how everything happened at that wee hour of Tuesday.
But, he did not talk after the whole explanation by the security operatives of the institute, and went straight to the hall where he delivered his own welcome remarks.
At the hall, Shettima commended the courage of the security personnel for their ability to repel the bandits at the end of the whole thing, saying that their courage is appreciated.
He said that he will provide solar light to all parts of the institute to further ensure security.
Shettima, who is the permanent visitor of NIPSS, commended President Tinubu, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah for preventing further attacks.
He said that NIPSS is a national asset to the nation, adding that more security forces should be provided.
The governor described the attack as unfortunate but thanked God because if the intention of the bandits had been achieved, “we would not be here today”,
Mutfwang was also grateful to the gallant security officers who defended the institute, Postulating that government will not retreat.
In his welcome address, the Director-General of the Insitute, Prof Ayo Omotayo, said that the visit of the Vice president was a reflection of their concern.
Omotayo said that the courage of the security personnel prevented what would have been a bloodied incident.
He said that the attack had exposed the vulnerability of NIPSS as a strategic institution of the country, because an attack on NIPSS is an attack on the nation.
In spite of the incident, he stressed that NIPSS has never failed to fulfill its mandate and programmes. “We are not discouraged. We remain undaunted. We remain confident to face challenges”.
