Ekiti election preliminary report demonstrates orderly, functional process — KDI

Ekiti State Governorship Election

One of the civil society organisations monitoring the Ekiti State governorship election, the Impact Development Initiative (KDI), has said preliminary findings from its Election Day Data Room indicate that the poll has so far demonstrated a generally orderly and functional electoral process.

Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti, KDI Executive Director, Bukola Idowu, said the election also exposed persistent operational vulnerabilities relating to election-day logistics, the timely arrival of election officials, commencement of polling activities and the performance of election technology.

“The evidence suggests that the principal challenge facing election administration in Ekiti has not been the occurrence of isolated major disruptions but the cumulative impact of multiple smaller operational constraints across different parts of the state,” she said.

Idowu stated that KDI would continue to monitor voting, voter experience, election security, ballot integrity, management of polling unit results and the collation process.

“Our final assessment will integrate election-day observation with post-election verification and forensic analysis to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the integrity, inclusiveness and credibility of the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election,” she added.

According to her, KDI received verified reports from 384 observation locations across the state regarding the arrival of election officials and materials.

The analysis, she said, showed that 52.3 per cent of polling units recorded early or on-time arrival of election officials, while 47.7 per cent experienced late arrival, based on the official benchmark of 7:30 a.m.

“KDI assessed the commencement of accreditation and voting using 8:45 a.m. as the benchmark for timely poll opening. Analysis from 318 verified reports indicates that 84.0 per cent of polling units commenced voting on time, while 16.0 per cent started later than the benchmark,” she explained.

She noted that observations from the field suggested that the election environment remained generally peaceful across the locations monitored.

KDI, however, reiterated that it would continue to observe the conduct of voting, voter experience, election security, ballot integrity, polling unit result management and the collation process.

The organisation added that its final report would combine election-day observations with post-election verification and forensic analysis to provide a comprehensive assessment of the integrity, inclusiveness and credibility of the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election.
