THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has warned its personnel against negligence in firearm handling, declaring that the agency will not tolerate cases of accidental discharge.
The FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, gave the warning during the graduation ceremony of 106 personnel who completed a two week intensive pistol management training course, yesterday in Abuja
Odumosu stated that accidental discharge remains the height of professional misconduct, emphasizing that the command would deal decisively with any operative found wanting.
He noted that the training was designed to sharpen the firearm handling skills of the officers and reinforce strict adherence to operational guidelines while safeguarding public safety and critical national assets.
“In the NSCDC, we do not condone accidental discharge, it is the height of professional misconduct and we do not take lightly to such misconduct.
“You must be accountable and ensure professionalism at all times,” he insisted.
The Commandant charged the graduating personnel to remain civil but firm in their interactions with the civil populace, reminding them that their core mandate centers on protection rather than intimidation.
Odumosu told his officers that “The public is not our enemy. You must observe the rules of engagement, act with restraint, and remember that you are deployed to protect lives and infrastructure, not to intimidate citizens.”
He expressed appreciation to the Commandant General for approving the capacity building program, noting that continuous training is central to the corps’ efficiency.
He also urged the participants to maintain discipline and prioritize national security above personal interest.
The two week exercise, which held at the FCT Command training ground, drilled participants in weapon safety, marksmanship, tactical handling, and the ethical use of force in line with global best practices and the NSCDC Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
The highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates to the graduands by the FCT Commandant.
