Amnesty demands probe of alleged killing of Islamic teacher in Kaduna

Amnesty International (AI)

Human rights organisation, Amnesty International (AI), has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of an Islamic school teacher identified as Malama Ummulkhairi, over allegations of child theft.

In a statement following the incident, which occurred in Mararaba, Jos, on June 21, 2026, AI said there are allegations that police officers handed the teacher over to an angry mob, which subsequently killed her and set her body ablaze.

It urged the police authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any officers were involved in the alleged actions, adding that “authorities must ensure that all those responsible for this unlawful killing are identified and brought to justice.”

The organisation further expressed concern over the increasing cases of mob violence driven by suspicion and unverified claims, warning that such acts undermine the rule of law and endanger innocent lives.

It also noted that the failure to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of mob killings has contributed to a culture of impunity, encouraging further acts of vigilante violence.

According to the group, a transparent investigation and prosecution of those found culpable would help restore public confidence in the justice system and deter similar incidents in the future.

A statement on Sunday by the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that a large mob stormed the station, overwhelmed officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from protective custody, and subsequently killed her and set her body ablaze.
