The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has declared an end to its year-long leadership crisis following the restoration of its recognised leadership structure by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), paving the way for renewed reconciliation and political mobilisation within the party.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, described the development as a decisive turning point for the party after months of internal disputes, court battles and competing leadership claims.
According to Gombe, the crisis erupted in June 2025 after the National Working Committee (NWC) suspended some members over alleged acts of misconduct, triggering a chain of legal and political confrontations that threatened party cohesion.
He said the party relied on its constitutional provisions by establishing disciplinary panels to investigate the allegations and ensure due process for all affected members.
The SDP chairman noted that the dispute eventually progressed through the courts, culminating in judicial pronouncements that reaffirmed the rights of political parties to manage their internal affairs in line with their constitutions.
He explained that after subsequent legal victories and ratification of party decisions by the National Executive Committee (NEC), INEC reviewed the matter and restored the names of the recognised SDP leadership on its official portal.
According to him, the electoral body’s decision has now settled lingering questions over the party’s leadership and confirmed the legitimacy of the current National Working Committee.
Gombe described the outcome as a triumph for internal democracy, party discipline and constitutional order, maintaining that the SDP remained committed to resolving disagreements through lawful and institutional channels.
He commended the judiciary for what he called its consistent defence of democratic principles and thanked party members, supporters and stakeholders for standing by the party throughout the crisis.
With the leadership dispute now resolved, the party has shifted its focus to reconciliation and rebuilding internal unity.
Gombe extended an olive branch to members affected by the crisis, urging them to return and participate in the party’s future activities.
He stressed that the SDP remained committed to fostering inclusiveness and healing divisions created by the prolonged dispute.
The party leader expressed optimism that the resolution would strengthen the SDP’s capacity to engage national issues and position itself more effectively ahead of future electoral contests.
He said the party was emerging from the crisis more united, focused and determined to expand its political relevance in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
