Chief Executive Officer, KPMG Africa, Tola Adeyemi, has urged listed firms to strengthen their corporate governance practices by ensuring effective monitoring of operations, improving transparency and accountability, as well as maintaining high ethical standards.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian at the KPMG Heritage Day Celebration at the weekend, Adeyemi pointed out that significant progress has been made since the introduction of corporate governance codes and regular assessments of listed companies.
According to him, many organisations have embraced better governance structures, enhanced board oversight and improved disclosure practices over the years.
He, however, noted that more work still needs to be done to deepen compliance, strengthen risk management frameworks, improve board effectiveness and ensure that governance principles are embedded in the day-to-day operations of businesses.
Adeyemi stressed that strong corporate governance remains critical to building investor confidence, attracting long-term capital, promoting sustainable business growth and safeguarding the interests of shareholders and other stakeholders.
He added that companies that prioritise transparency, accountability and ethical leadership are better positioned to withstand economic challenges and deliver long-term value.
He called on listed firms to continue to review their governance structures, invest in capacity building for directors and management and adopt global best practices that will enhance corporate performance and support the overall development of the capital market.
Adeyemi pointed out that the firm is rooted in integrity, professionalism, excellence, hard work and perseverance, noting that these values have been passed from one generation to another since the firm’s inception.
According to him, the celebration was an opportunity to honour those who contributed to the growth of the firm, including past and present partners, staff and alumni whose efforts helped shape KPMG into a leading professional services institution.
